In celebration of Schmidt's 100 years in business, Mayor Dana "Buck" Rinehart proclaimed March 6th, 1986 as "Bahama Mama Day" in the city of Columbus. The honorable mayor also jokingly pronounced the Schmidt's Bahama Mama and Jumbo Cream Puff as being the 8th and 9th wonders of the world.
2002 was a significant year for the Schmidt's cream puff, with the nationally syndicated television program Food Network announcing our cream puff as a "Best Of" recipient in Ohio in the deserts category. The network aired segments of the program across the country several times over the year, bringing national acclaim to the Columbus icon.
The Bahama Mama? Although the name doesn't sound German, the recipe sure is! When you think of Columbus sandwiches, the Schmidt's Bahama Mama is always at the top of your list. Named by Columbus Monthly as "One Of Columbus' Favorite Dishes" as well as the
Columbus Dispatch calling the Bahama Mama "A Trademark Dish" for the city!
Located at 240 East Kossuth at the jog at Purdy Alley, Schmidt's Sausage House originally was a livery stable. Built in 1870, the stable was run by German immigrants who repaired the horse drawn carriages for many of the local mercantile doing business in and around the "south end" properly named German Village. Renovated in 1967, the building was announced as a National Historic Place by the United States Department Of The Interior in 1972. Today, the wood floors, original brick walls and the German attire worn by the wait staff, all bring back crystal clear memories of the buildings historic past.
On July 31, 1968 Anheuser Busch, the new brewery in Columbus, delivered it's first keg brewed to the front entry of Schmidt's in German Village. Busch marked the historic event by delivering via traditional horse drawn carriage. On hand for the celebration were George and Grover Schmidt, and Miss Columbus 1968. Also attending but not pictured was Columbus Mayor Sensenbrenner.
